Eating healthy for the beginners

It is extremely important to know how to prepare proper, nutritional meals since the very beginning. Thus, the school has a powerful opportunity to teach kids to appreciate and enjoy wholesome foods by using creative children’s activities about healthy eating. To make the workshops more impressive the older students were asked to prepare and show the younger ones presentations about groups of food products, their functions and rules which should be followed while making meals. After that the children prepared smoothies, cocktails, salads and desserts, trying to follow the rules they had been taught. Also during English classes they played various games learning vocabulary, designing their healthy pizzas, dividing products according to their origins and planning their wholesome meals.

Meal planning

To show the younger ones how to plan their meals and influence their parents to provide healthy lunches and snacks for them we conducted workshops with a dietician, dr Anna Walentukiewicz, from Academy of Gdansk Universityof Physical Education and Sport. Additionally, they consolidated what they learned during Biology and English classes. The studemts:

  • Learned the main types of nutrients, such as protein, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins and which products are the vital sources of these nutrients
  • were taught how to choose foods and beverages with healthier fats, less sodium, and less added sugars
  • planned their own weekly menu for school lunches
  • brought their healthy packed lunches from home, they presented them, took photos and made films about their lunches
  • learned how to assess the nutritional value of the meal and how to read labels
  • watched school lunches from other countries and discussed their value – how healthy the food is, how much protein, fat and carbohydrates it contains, how many portions of fruit and vegetables it has got
  • learned how to share information about the benefit of healthy eating
  • were told which food use to keep their energy up for longer and how to keep themselves fuller for longer and avoid energy drinks as well as to replace ingredients regularly to provide variety
  • were taught how to identify spices and herbs which can be used instead of salt.
  • planned their own daily meals

Vegetables and Fruit – the Nutrition Source

No single fruit or vegetable provides all of the nutrients you need to grow up and prosper, but eating some of them every day you will make sure that you bestow your organism with all the elements you need. Meals rich in fruit and vegetables may reduce the risk of heart attack and digestive problems, they prevent some types of cancer,  have positive effect on your skin and brain functioning. Their low glycemic index keep sugar peaks in check. Older students prepared the e-publication about vitamins and elements, they younger ones took part in various games and plays during which they learned the English names of the seasonal fruit and vegetables. The activities they performed:

  • Learning the names of the fruit and vegetables, labelling parts of plants, deciding which parts are edible, prioritizing them in terms of vitamin content
  • Making pictures from fruit and vegetables and preparing healthy snacks
  • Engaging students in breakout room games – reviewing material and problem – solving skills in  groups working together to solve a series of challenges in order to find subsequent clues before the time limit expires. They are an engaging activity to review content as well as foster collaboration and problem-solving skills.
  • Making laparellos and lapbooks – the folders in which students in a creative way presented food pyramids, their diet requirements, fruit and vegetables and healthy tips customized to emphasize the subject of the lapbbook. All the resources were collected and presented on the exhibition held in the school hall, as well as other games made by students, such as memory, decide wheels etc. https://animoto.com/play/rjmd3A1goO0Z6P5GlPGVOw

Healthy life education

The main objective of healthy life education developed in our school is promoting the benefits of healthy lifestyle, dangers of obesity, the importance of physical activities and taking responsibility for your decisions. We try to implement healthy rules since the earliest levels of education and we make our students take part in various cross- curricular activities in a series of nutrition and healthy lifestyle education classes presented to children from grade 3 to 7. We focus mainly on benefits of a balanced diet, the importance of staying outdoor and being active, appreciating friendship and being optimistic. All the classes included:

  • Lots of interaction
  • Discussing does and don’ts of routine activities
  • Online games, quizzes, board games,
  • Creating weekly menus
  • Presenting different diets, like vegetarian, vegan or gluten free, demonstrating properties of nutrients, macro and microelements

All these activities were performed during Biology, English and Physical Education classes.  All the presentations were collected in one publication.  https://app.bookcreator.com/read/SqM2qVEjQ86rFhLLFTxdMg

Healthy food – the younger learners

Food plays a vital part in keeping us fit and it is important to make sure children realize the impact it has got on their condition. They were presented with healthy food ideas, learned how to replace snacks with some healthier ones, how to compose funny face sandwiches, smoothies or salads. They played various vocabulary games, like trimmino, knowledge quizzes, team contests and tried to create their own pyramids according to the rules presented. They learned:

  • what grain foods include
  • what dairy products are
  • what healthy snacks are, like dried fruit, smoothies or fruit lollipops
  • what tastes of these snacks are

Proper eating habits are essential for healthy lifestyle, which, in turn, helps to manage stress, increases efficiency of the immune system, restores balance and makes our life calmer and better organized. Needless to say, cooking and having meals together is considered one of the most bonding and pleasant pastimes. In order to introduce the topic to the students we are sharing the teaching resources for online English classes.

Follow a healthy lifestyle

We have had the visit of a nurse of the local NHS, who made an oral presentation to all the students of the school talking them about how to follow a healthy lifestyle, specially in terms of food and diet. She provided them with the key factors that compose a healthy diet and gave them tricks to make it as easy as possible for them and helped them when answering all the questions the students had for her. They were curious and enthusiastic about this activity! Specially those who are taking part in the project, as for them it was a really interesting opportunity to go in depth in its objectives and it was another source of motivation for them.

The objectives of the activity:

  • understanding the role of nutrients in the body
  • classifying nutrients, their functions, and food sources and compare the nutritive value of various foods
  • assessing the effects of nutritional intake on health, appearance, effective job performance, and personal life
  • understanding the neccesity of reducing fat and calories in food intake

World Health Days

This year for the fifth time our school has celebrated the World Health Day. This spring, because of the lockdown, we had to organize it online. The team of teachers in charge of arranging the event were collecting the resources which afterwards were uploaded on the paddlet and students ask well as their tutors and parents were continuously encouraged to make themselves familiar with the resources. All the materials were classified into:

  • recipes for healthy food, which included video clips presenting healthy snacks made by the teachers
  • video clips about motivation and controlling emotions
  • presentations about the effects which smoking has got on the human body
  • tips on the healthy diet
  • pieces of advice on being fit and boosting stamina
  • some information about preservatives and coloring food

Italian students developed presentations about the new rules which they are obliged to follow according to the Covid -19 regulations. All the works were collected in one publication. https://www.canva.com/design/DAFKzv4S_Ak/WnO0pXT3iFfrKHCKIOcidA/view?utm_content=DAFKzv4S_Ak&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=homepage_design_menu

Finally, students took part in the virtual breakout game, during which they could check how much they had learned during the classes and from the resources collected. They did like the game and managed to break out from the surgery.

Breakfast time!

This activity was performed totally online. The 3rd Grade pupils learned about healthy snacks, how to make them and why they are good for them. They had to separate unhealthy snacks from the healthy ones and plan their own breakfast. https://view.genial.ly/5e78a2ca0fcfb90d9fa2d354/presentation-healthy-food

After that the pupils were asked to design their own breakfast, make it, describe what was used and take a photo. All the photos and descriptions were collected and compiled in one book published online. https://read.bookcreator.com/NzQwFa43UKEYO64os58ysQuzobux8pDgttigD–vSY4/m2UZikRERKqZi7pRXDYFNg

Go! Slow! No!

You are what you eat.

In order to find out which food is good and nutritious for teenagers two classes took part in a mini-project Go!Slow! No!. The 4th class started from learning vocabulary. The children, split into groups of three, worked with food cards. They were supposed to find between them the ones which contained carbs, proteins, vitamins and fats. They also recognized and discussed the roles of all the main macronutrients and vitamins. Afterwards, each group received one index card with the information about them and had to present it in a graphic way on the poster.

The objectives of the activity:

  • Categorizing all the food cards in 3 basic nutrients group
  • Presenting on the plate what the accurate proportions of the main nutrients groups are: 65 % carbohydrates, 25%proteins and 20% fats
  • Making ‘vitamin boards’ and presenting food which is particularly rich in them
  • Drawing a table with ‘don’t worry, go ahead’ food, ‘carefully with that’ food and ‘under no condition’ food
  • Building a healthy fit person out of food cards and  obese, consisting of fast food one.

Additionally, we measured the content of sugar in the most common snacks and drinks. To visualize the amount of saccharine we presented it using sugar cubes and displayed bags with packages, sugar cubes and measurement calculations on the board in the hall. It did attract the attention. Probably also some thinking. Below, the link to the materials and worksheets used during the workshops.
